Kennington’s Mansion

At the heart of the historic Belhaven neighborhood of Jackson, Mississippi, lies the grand and storied Kennington's Mansion.

The Kennington legacy began in the early 1900s with Robert Estes Kennington, one of Jackson's most successful merchants. His thriving downtown department store moved into 401 E Capitol Street in 1905, opening its doors to the public as Jones-Kennington Dry Goods Store. That same year, Kennington began building "Kenwood," a magnificent brick mansion and estate. By the 1920s, the grounds housed tennis courts, a large pergola with fountains, lush rose gardens, a peach orchard, a greenhouse, a barn with stables, and a lake.

In the 1930s, the home's foundation gave way, and its original materials - including the doors, hardware, moldings, hardwood floors, and the grand staircase - were dissembled to build 1020 Carlisle Street, a smaller version of the mansion. Through the years, Robert befriended many Jacksonians, including the family of TH Kendall, builders of the historic Kendall House, Ragland Hospitality's other boutique vacation rental.

Kennington’s Mansion as it exists today was built c.1940 and is coming alive again with all the splendor of yesteryear. Join us for an exclusive experience that rivals anywhere else, in a state and city known for its acclaimed arts, culture, and unparalleled hospitality. Your invitation awaits.
